800AD: The Holy Roman Empire. The Christian Church becomes aware of the roadblock in the effort to subvert other powers. The mystics, or mages, who continue to use the names of the oldest powers known, and pass these names on to their children. However, the Church as a whole has suffered greatly itself from the War of Names, and as such has decided to end its practice of striking names...at least for a time.
But within the Church a splinter group determines to prepare the way for the continuation. After viewing the actions of famed Hunters in the lands of the Germans, they fashion a book. Its intent is to create willing servants who would seek to cleanse the world of the one group the Churchs could not touch. Stamped on the binding is the name "Venator Veneficium".
1187AD: The fall of Jerusalem. "Venator Veneficium" vanishes from the possession of the Church, believed to have been taken by the Muslims during the confusion of the takeover. There exist no records detailing the book's existence in the Muslim scholars, yet Mage Hunters begin to grow in number among the Middle Eastern countries.
As trades between the Eastern countries open further, a marked increase in the deaths of noted clerics and priests in China, India, and Japan shows signs that the Book may yet again have passed hands into Asia.
1271-1295AD: The famous Marco Polo completes his travels to the court of China and returns home. In his luggage rides the Book, purchased at great cost but left unread due to the warnings of the seller. As the Book passed through Rome, where it was born, it suddenly changes, drawing upon the power that has been pooling in that great religious capital. It vanishes from Polo's collection, continuing its established charge with a growing intelligence and sense of self-preservation.
1682AD: At long last, the Book arrives in the Americas, encountering the power established and drawn by the American Indian religions. The clash of Essense opens a crack in the Book's protection from corruption, and the as-of-then unnamed Entropy of the Universe brushes a finger over it. Slowly, the intelligence and purpose are warped to the modern Book: creating insane hunters without reason.

In the time before there was a world, there was a Dragon who had decided he'd had enough. Curling in on himself, he snapped at his tail, desiring to devour himself and die. It took him centuries to catch his own tail, as his spinning flung his sweat and blood from near catches into the void he had chosen as his grave. The sweat burned with his vigors, while the blood cooled and hardened.
Finally, he caught his tail and began to eat. As he did energy pulsed out from him, causing reactions in everything he had flung loose. The sweat became stars, with the closest gathering turning into the Sun. The freed blood grew and gathered about the Sun, forming lifeless planets slowly over the eons as he ate.
Life was born, without thought or guidance. As more and more power was freed from its prison, it pooled in places, independent of the new landscape it had forged. From these Pools was born the first sentient life. **What** it was has always been debated, but Humans were one of the many Firstborn. Thus began the Lost Times.

The sweat became stars, with the closest gathering turning into the Sun. The freed blood grew and gathered about the Sun, forming lifeless planets slowly over the eons as he ate.
Eventually...he died from his self-inflicted wounds. His body, curled into a tight ball, slowly decayed. But his unreleased potential and power would not let him become like the other lifeless husks in the void. His blood flowed still, trapped within the bounds of his dead corpse, changing the flesh into a world capable of supporting life. When at last spots of blood seeped to the surface, the world was ready to be inhabited.
Life was born, without thought or guidance. As more and more power was freed from its prison, it pooled in places, independent of the new landscape it had forged. From these pools was born the first sentient life. **What** it was has always been debated, but Humans were one of the many Firstborn. Thus began the Lost Times.
== Lost Times ==
As each Firstborn grew, they developed the precursor of religion, worshiping the places from which they had been born. These pools slowly fed off this worship, gaining a semblance of sentience. And when the Firstborn at last made contact with each other, so did the Pools. They were supremely confused, at first, because they had been separated from the source for decades now and could not recall what they once were. Yet each Pool seemed as the next.
When the Firstborn realized this, they decreed that the other Pools were children of their own, or deviations. They wanted to "rejoin" them all into one, but under their own Pool. So they warred. Eventually, when all that they had had was undone, the Humans won.
The Pools were combined together under the Humans' worship. It realized what they had done, and wished to undo history. But it did not remember how they had made the other Firstborn. So instead it decided to reset the Humans back to their beginnings. Then it hid its existence. The Dawn of Man had been set.

The balance of divine power was felt to be at peril, so with Julian's death and the crowning of the Christian Jovian, the first actions were taken to begin destroying knowledge of certain divine beings. The process was largely unsuccessful.
The acceptance of gods becoming demons grows steadily over time, but little change is seen in the balance of divine power.
A war breaks out as beings newly born from the efforts to subvert older power seek to seal off their predecessors. Thousands of minor beings are slain, their names stricken from history by the actions of enlightened mortals. Others are imprisoned till their names may be destroyed.
However, the Church as a whole has suffered greatly itself from the War of Names, and as such has decided to end its practice of striking names...at least for a time.

Again, just like regular old Earth. Unless you go into Occult Society, in which case things are quite different. In this, station is determined by one's knowledge and power (gained from knowledge), and is typically recognized within individual Orders. Those who aren't associated with an Order are generally regarded as liabilities, because they aren't "controlled".
